Let’s start with the basic one, in order to start a medical store for any region of India. You’ll have to take a license for it and it mandatory without license starting a chemist shop totally illegal. However, The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization and State Drugs Standard Control Organization control the issued license for drug stores and the license can be obtained for two types of businesses like one comes for retails drug license, generally it’s for the medical (chemist) store and second license that is known as wholesale drug license (WDL). The business can be set up under a proprietorship or a partnership. Facts to know - Retail Drug License is issued to the person who holds a valid Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharmacy) from the recognized Pharmacy College / University. But the procedure to gain Wholesale License is quite different from the retail license, you may contact drug officer.

The Basic Requirements to Availing a Drugs License in India

  1. The area should be around 107.639 square foot to cover the medical store.
  2. A refrigerator should be there to keep the required medicines
  3. A well technical staff should be available who can easily understand client’s requirements

Required Documents

Find the list of the important documents which shall be required during obtaining a license.
  1. Application form in the prescribed format
  2. Covering Letter with the intent of the application signed with name and designation of the applicant
  3. Challan of fee deposited for obtaining drug license
  4. Declaration form in the format prescribed
  5. Key plan for the premises
  6. Site plan for the premises
  7. Proof of ownership of the premises
  8. Proof of constitution of the business (Incorporation Certificate / MOA / AOA / Partnership Deed)
  9. Affidavit of non-conviction of proprietor / Partners/ Directors under Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940
  10. Affidavit of the registered pharmacist or competent person working full time
  11. Appointment letter of registered pharmacist/competent person, if employed person.
