Supreme Court to hear case against Dec 16 underage derelict’s release

DELHI: The Supreme Court will on Monday hear Delhi Commission for Women’s case against the release of underage convict in the December 16 gang rape case.
Justice AK Goel on early Sunday morning took this decision after the DCW sought its immediate intervention on the ground that releasing the underage without even an assessment of the mental state may be extremely dangerous to the society. Late on Saturday night Chief Justice of India TS Thakur referred the case to vacation bench after DCW approached the SC to file a special leave petition against release of the underage derelict, which is scheduled to be released on Sunday morning. Maliwal said that she approached SC after her letters to many authorities, including President and others did not lead to any decision. “Wrote letters, ws waitin for meet with Vice President. Once that didn’t lead to any decision on Nirbhaya rapist, filed case in SC (sic),” she said in a tweet.   A total number of the six men convicted in gang rape in which one died in jail while four have been sentenced to death. Earlier, the parents of the gang rape victim, along with 40 Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University students, were detained by the police as they staged a protest against the release of the underage convict.
