NEW DELHI:  According to report, Former Indian naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav, who had been arrested in Pakistan last year on charges of spying, has been sentenced to death in Pakistan, its military announced today. India summoned Pakistan ' s  ambassador  Abdul Basit in Delhi and said, "If this sentence against an Indian citizen, awarded without observing basic norms of law and justice, is carried out, the Government and people of India will regard it as a case of premeditated murder." Officials at the Indian high commission said that they were not formally informed of the development by the Pakistani government. The government also says despite repeated requests for consular access to Mr Jadhav, Indian diplomats were not allowed to meet him.
In March last year, Islamabad released what it claimed was a video confession of Mr Jadhav and said he revealed how India engineers violence and separatism in the restive province of Balochistan. India acknowledged Mr Jadhav as a retired navy man, but denied that he was in any way connected to the government. Islamabad ' s main allegation was that the official, who retired in 2013, was an active agent of India ' s Research and Analysis Wing or RAW, a charge denied by India. Government sources said he often carried cargo to and from Iranian ports bordering Pakistan and had nothing to do with India ' s external intelligence agency. Sources also said that there was no proof that the retired Navy officer was arrested in Balochistan as claimed by Pakistan.
