Tour to Mars in just 30 minutes

New Delhi :-In a video blog for NASA scientist Phil Lubin announced that the agency is working on laser propulsion technology which could get a spacecraft from Earth to Mars in as little as three days.
The agency mentioned of developing a craft which would rely on a technology called ‘photonic propulsion’. This technology would allow spaceships to explore space at an unprecedented speed. Lubin wrote in a paper published in the Journal of the British Interplanetary Society: “As an example, on the eventual upper end, a full-scale (50-70 GW) DE-STAR 4 – Directed Energy System for Targeting of Asteroids and Exploration – will propel a wafer scale spacecraft with a one meter sail to about 26 percent the speed of light in about 10 minutes. [It would] reach Mars (1 AU) in 30 minutes, pass Voyager 1 in less than 3 days, pass 1,000 AU in 12 days and reach Alpha Centauri in about 15 years.” One of the striking facts about this spacecraft remains that this wont be required to carry fuel, reducing the mass as well as cost of the vehicle. The red planet, its atmosphere have always enraptured the earthlings. Exploring Mars is also one of the extraterrestrial targets for scientists around the world. Currently travelling to Mars would take around nine months to arrive using standard chemical rockets. While this proposal by physicist Lubin can be seen as a major breakthrough in science and technology.
