NEW DELHI: Chhath puja is an ancient and important festival for hindu religion. In 2016, the puja starts on 4th November and will end on 6th November. The chhath puja is dedicated to the Lord surya (Sun) and his wife Chhathi maiyya. Puja is celebrated to thank lord Surya (Sun) for sustaining life on Earth. Chhat puja worshiped twice a year, once it is celebrated in the summers, some days after holi and secondly Chhat puja celebrates on the sixth day of the month of Kartika (October / November) in the Vikram Samvat. It is celebrated mainly in the states of Bihar, Up, Jharkhand, MP and some parts of Nepal. Thus, Devotees are very passionate for the karthika month’s chhath puja. The each four days of celebration of chat puja has its own importance and significance. Nahay Khay (4th November 2016) -The first day of Chhath Puja, devotees take a dip in the holy water such as Ganga River or Kosi River etc and takes holy water to prepare the offerings. Lohanda (5th November 2016) - The second day of chhath puja, devotees fast for the whole day and the fast ends a little after the sunset in the evening. The devotees prepare Kheer and roti in the offering. After the rituals of offering the Prasad to the god, the devotees will consume and Prasad is distributed to the family and relatives. Devotees continue fast for 36 hours without water from the next day. Sandhya Arghya (evening offerings) (6th November 2016) - The Third day of Chhat puja, after preparing the prasad, the devotees take a dip in the holy water body in the evening and worship the Sun god and Chhathi maiyya with the folk songs, fruits and Prasad. Suryodaya Arghya (7th November 2016) - The fourth day, devotees go to the holy waters and offer morning offerings to the rising sun, following which they break their fast. Thus chhatt puja is one of the most devotional festivals which worshipped with full purity by the hindu peoples.
