moharram festival 2015DELHI: This mourning festival is observed by mostly Shia Muslims. Today is Muharram which Muslims celebrate it as a tragedy festival in the memory of Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad and son of Ali who killed in the Battle of Karbala. And hence Shia Muslims flagellate themselves with sharp objects on their heads, chest and back on Muharram. The word "Muharram" means "Forbidden" and harām meaning "sinful . Some Muslims fast during these days. The tenth day of Muharram is the Day of Ashura, which to Shia Muslims is part of the Mourning of Muharram. Shia Muslims during Muharram do different things and with different intentions. They observe and respect Muharram as the month that martyred Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad and son of Ali, in the Battle of Karbala. They mourn for Hussein ibn Ali and remove from all joyous events. Unlike Sunni Muslims, Shiites do not fast in this month, especially on the 9th and 10th days of Muharram. Muslims mourns it everywhere. Particularly , the Muharram has been seen to mourning by Muslims at Nangloi, Sultanpuri, Jahangirpuri and other places in Delhi . Muharram ends peacefully at these places.
