NEW DELHI: Guru Nanak Jayanti is being celebrated by the sikh communities across the India on Saturday, November 4, 2017 in the memory of his 548th birth anniversary which was the founder of faith. It is also called
Gurpurab.
Guru Nanak Jayanti is considered as one of the most sacred festivals of the Sikhs. It is the day that celebrates the birth of Guru Nanak, the first of the ten Sikh Gurus and one who shaped the beliefs of the community. Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the nation on the occasion.
The celebrations of the festival begin two days ago with Gurudwaras holding a forty-eight-hour long non-stop chanting of the Guru Granth Sahib, which is the holy book of the Sikhs, known as the Akhand Path.
The celebrations on Gurpurab commence early morning, the time known as Amrit Vela, with the singing of morning hymns.
Celebrations begin with morning processions known as Prabhat Pheris as people proceed to the Gurudwaras singing hymns.
Nine hundred and seventy-four shabads , or hymns, by Guru Nanak, including the ‘Japji Sahib’ and ‘Asa di vaar ’ are integral to the Guru Granth Sahib, the holy book that is regarded as the living guru and is at the heart of all gurdwara worship.
Community lunches arranged by Gurudwaras, known as
langar, are organised by volunteers and hundreds gather to eat together.
